Among the verses of the Qur’an, few are as widely memorised, recited, and cherished as Ayatul Kursi, found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255). Muslims around the world turn to this verse for comfort, protection, and a deeper understanding of Allah’s unmatched greatness. Its words, rich with meaning and profound in message, serve as a reminder of who Allah is and how completely creation depends on Him.
While it is often recited for its protective benefits, the true beauty of Ayatul Kursi lies in its powerful theological depth—a complete summary of Allah’s attributes, sovereignty, and authority over the universe.
Allahu laaa ilaaha illaa Hu, Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom
Allah! There is no deity (worthy of worship) except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.
Laa ta’khudhuhuu sinatun wa laa nawm
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.
Lahu maa fissamaawaati wa maa fil-ard
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
Man zalladhee yashfa’u ‘indahu illaa bi-idhnih
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
He knows what is presently before them and what will be after them.
Wa laa yuheetoona bishai’im min ‘ilmihi illaa bimaa shaa.’
And they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
Wasi’a kursiyyuhus samaawaati wal-ard
His Kursi (throne) extends over the heavens and the earth.
Wa laa ya’ooduhu hifzuhumaa
And their preservation tires Him not.
Wa Huwal-Aliyyul-Azeem
And He is the Most High, the Most Great.(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
What Makes Ayatul Kursi So Unique?
Scholars describe Ayatul Kursi as the most powerful verse in the Qur’an—not because of its length, but because of the extraordinary attributes of Allah mentioned within it. It is a verse that teaches:
1. Pure Monotheism (Tawheed)
It begins with an absolute declaration that no one is worthy of worship except Allah. This is the core message of Islam.
2. Allah’s Eternal Life and Self-Sustaining Nature
He is Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living) and Al-Qayyum (The One who sustains everything).
Creation exists because He maintains it—constantly, ideally, without fatigue.
3. His Perfection Beyond Human Limitations
Sleep, tiredness, and weakness never affect Him.
This establishes that Allah’s power and control are never interrupted.
4. His Absolute Ownership
Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him.
Every soul, every planet, every star, every blessing.
5. Intercession Only by His Permission
Nothing and no one—no angel, prophet, saint—can intercede unless Allah allows it.
6. His Boundless Knowledge
He knows everything:
-
the past,
-
the present,
-
the future,
-
the unseen.
Human knowledge is tiny compared to His infinite wisdom.
7. The Kursi (Seat of Authority)
Not a physical chair as humans imagine, but a symbolic expression of Allah’s unimaginable governance over the universe.
8. His Effortless Preservation of Creation
The heavens and earth require no effort for Allah to maintain.
His power is limitless.
9. His Exalted Status
The verse ends by reaffirming His unmatched greatness.
Ayatul Kursi is essentially a complete, concise theology of who Allah is.
